Gender Dysphoria in the Family
OK, I'll admit, that's a weird topic for a TS Sex Blog, but as regular readers know, I'm "all over the place" with my Blog, LOL!
Many times, an email I receive in the "Ask Karla" mailbox is requesting help in a family situation regarding Gender Dysphoria.
As I've mentioned before, I'm not a counselor or therapist, I'm merely a male to female (M2F) Transsexual. I base my opinions on real-life experience.
I fully believe that one should live their lives the way THEY see fit. For so many years, I was "locked into" what society dictated. I was unhappy, I drank, I threw myself into my work, so I wouldn't have to deal with what was really going on inside. Had I continued to do that, I probably would have killed myself in one way or another. I look at those years as "wasted."
Yes, I saw several shrinks, but back then, and even now, unfortuately, few are well-versed in the issues of Transsexualism. The majority
of those who are, are tainted by "meainstream thinking," in my opinion. I have always know what I was and I don't need to "jump through any hoops" to prove that to anyone. If your going to seek counseling, DO YOUR
RESEARCH!
Back to my point, however, (again, my opinion) if you have a family member that seriously identifies with the opposite sex, you should encourage and support that person in every way possible. NOBODY should deny who they are. Learn everything you can to help. If (and this is a BIG IF) you can locate a well-trained
counselor or therapist, that is well thought of in the Transgender Community, you probably should consider having that person seek assistance.
There have been many TS's that literally destroyed their lives, by not being themselves.
If you provide a return email address, I always keep a list of informational websites and trusted therapists handy. Keep ALL the emails coming in.
